Bicycle builder Faliero Masi got his start in racing professionally in the 1930s, competing in the Giro d’Italia and Milan San Remo. Faliero Masi gained valuable insight into the needs of other racers and racers’ ideal bikes as a result of his own racing experience, which fueled his own quest for excellence among other bike makers.

Masi designed a frame for a European rider with longer fork rake angles and wheelbases to improve stability and tracking on cobblestone roads. Because of this, American-manufactured Masi framesets were not necessarily the same as those made for European racers such as Eddy Merckx, for example. Instead, they were designed to handle the smoother and less challenging roads of the American countryside.
Masi also made frames that were tailored to the needs of individual cyclists rather than the industry-standard shapes that were prominent at the time and continue to be so today. As a result of Masi’s expertise and comprehensive knowledge of professional bike racing, each Cicli Masi bike earned World Championship stripes.
Masi Bikes and Eddy Merckx
Eddy Merckx, one of the best cyclists of all time, rose to prominence in the 1960s when he joined the Faema team. The Cannibal won the 1967 UCI Road World Championships almost shortly after joining the Faema Team. Faliero Masi built the bike that brought Merckx to this legendary triumph, but due to contractual constraints, the Masi name could not be shown on the bike

Masi was motivated to get back to work after seeing the potential of the racing bikes he had designed for Eddy Merckx (Team Faema). The Masi Gran Criterium, which he introduced in 1970, was immediately recognised as a huge success and is widely considered to be one of the best Italian bicycles ever made.
