The company began as a subcontractor constructing bicycle frames for several brands, such as Schwinn, in the 1970s.

Taichung County’s Dajia District has been the primary manufacturing hub until that point (now known as Taichung City).

It was also decided to expand its manufacturing facilities because of an increase in demand for Giant bikes because of their reliability.

Deal with Schwinn as a Frame Subcontractor

However, in 1977, the then CEO of Giant Bicycle Company, i.e. Tony Lo, made an agreement with Schwinn, which was a big breakthrough (Another Leading Bicycle Brand).

The agreement intended to produce bicycle frames for other companies as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

To supply Schwinn’s growing demand for bicycles after its workers went on strike, Giant became its primary supplier.

In fact, it began supplying Schwinn with two-thirds of its bikes as recently as the mid-1980s.

Giant’s New Era Begins with Bill Austin
Schwinn and Giant have decided to separate after a conflict arose between the two companies.

While Schwinn was on the hunt for a new bike manufacturer, Giant made another stride forward.

During Bill Austin’s presidency, Giant launched its own brand after a dispute with Schwinn.

Taichung County’s Dajia District was the only place where bicycle frames were mass produced at the time.

Buying Shares in Giant Europe

While this was going on, Giant and Dutch bicycle maker Koga Miyata formed a joint venture called “Giant Europe”. The shares that Andries Gaastra had in this venture were later returned to Giant by the investor.

In 1992, Giant purchased the entire stock of Giant Europe and began producing some of the most dependable gravel, cyclocross, and mountain bikes on the market.

Revenues and Profits

Giant had a successful year in nearly 50 countries, according to the company’s 2018 sales figures. In addition, the company operated 12,000 retail locations around the world.

This brand’s annual sales topped 6.6 million bicycles, with a revenue of almost US$ 1.9 billion, thanks to its high-quality products.

Demand for Covid-19 and the Increase in Bicycles

As a result of the current pandemic, demand for bicycles has already grown, particularly in Europe and the United States.

Giant bicycle manufacture in Taiwan rose as a result of this surge, while maintaining quality and reliability.

As a result of this surge in demand, Giant has also announced plans to develop a new manufacturing facility in Europe.

Additionally, it’s working to relocate its manufacturing facilities from China to Taiwan.
