Andrew Ritchie, a British engineer and inventor best known for his work on the Brompton folding bike, began work on the first prototype in 1975 in South Kensington, London. The prototypes were built in his one-bedroom flat while he listened to the music from the Brompton Oratory, after which our bikes are named.

Each bike is now hand-brazed in our London factory, more than 40 years after it was first made. Every Brompton is incredibly tough and one-of-a-kind because of the precise brazing process. After completing an 18-month apprenticeship with Brompton, each brazer earns the right to stamp their “signature” on specific parts of the bike they work on.

Design

Since the beginning, we’ve focused on creating products that have real-world utility. Always built to withstand the test of time and perform reliably. Staying united under one roof allows us to adhere to our core values. We strive to improve the quality of our products and services, and we are meticulous in our attention to the smallest of details.

The Brompton, in our opinion, is a bike with personality, whether or not it was meant to be. And so is the place where it’s built. It is common for our own factory machines to have parts named after those who built them.
